#City Life – #Motorbikes!

13 Mar

#Motorbikes, motorbikes go so slow. . . 🎀 Motorbikes, motorbikes go so fast . . . Motorbikes, motorbikes put on the gas!🎹

We used to sing that when I was a kid like Ring Around the Rosie. πŸ˜‚

With Maturity Comes Despair

23 Feb

β€œThere are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of merit or sense.”

A Bit of #Adventure

“I wish sometimes that there was still a bit of adventure in the world. That wandering the world and the nations within it was both less dangerous from threat of war or terror and yet risky in that you were facing the unknown and the elements. To step onto a boat knowing that you took your life in your hands just for the chance to see a minaret or the pyramids or the rising temple in the distance. Knowing that you were going where few dared to tred. In a place that would take months to reach. Seeing things that others only dreamed of. To know that you were setting off into a world neither micromanaged nor constantly watched and guarded andΒ known.Β  To be unknown in a world that was unknown.Β  Perhaps it is simply the romantic novels speaking or the spirit in me that was raised on stories of the great explorers of old. But it feels as though so much of the world is either politically frightening or simply has been seen a million times by a million eyes and photographs. They say that with globalization, the world continually shrinks. I feel that is true, and tragic in some way. There is something glorious in the idea of a very large world. One that has unknown possibilities and potential and newness to it. One that is too large to lay out on a computer screen and cannot be summarized in a geography book. Yes, although coming together is a wonderful thing and a miracle of our time, I wish sometimes that there was still a bit of adventure in the world.”Β

Happy #Thanksgiving!

Delicous treasure from one of my adorable students today – another gave me some Bon Bons.  Since I had to work on #thanksgiving (not a Holiday abroad 😭), this was quite the treat!

So #Old

20 Jun

My students have been taking graduate pictures. πŸ“· πŸŽ“ They keep talking about how ‘old they are’ now – they’re like 19-24. 😱 Horrible I know. . .  I’m 27! They’re aging me folks! If they’re ‘old’ – I’m one step out of the grave πŸ‘»

#Teacher Humor ~ Why my darlings, Why?!?

19 Jun

Student πŸ‘¦attends a sum total of 9/22 classes πŸ’»for the semester — not including the last class where we discussed the examπŸ“š. Sends me an urgent emailπŸ“§, “But Teacher, we have many questions before the test.” . . . . . .

Me πŸ‘© πŸ’’ (in my mind. . .) “I don’t think you need to worry about that”.πŸ™„
My actual answer πŸ‘© (😣)”. . . . . I distinctly remember πŸ€”telling you not ❌ to miss any more classesπŸ““ this semester — you missed 🏝three in a row. We discussed the test last class, but you skipped itπŸ’€πŸ˜΄.”
Student πŸ‘¦: “Oh yes teacher. I know!”

#TeachingLols ~ That’s a lot of Kids!

6 Apr
πŸ˜†
So I’m working with my international students (Mongolia, Indonesia, and India) and asked what they did this summer.
One girl goes off because she expected to have a vacation, but got stuck working. She starts listing all of her chores, complaining, and the other students are just nodding along commiserating.
She finally gets to the part where she had to babysit her siblings and cousins. The kids are like “yep, yep” right up until she goes “So, I just want to say that I’ve learned from this summer. I mean, I am totally not going to have more than 5 kids. That’s just more than enough.” Said completely sincerely with no inflection or emphasis at all. Β You could see them start to nod again, stop, look at one another and turn in unison to stare at her. One girl goes “FIVE kids” with eyes real big. She goes “Yeah! I mean, I think stopping there is plenty.” They stare some more. I crack up secretly on the inside.
This in the country where 2 kids is only just now allowed universally and is still pretty rare in the cities.Β
