Do You Eat Mouth?

31 Dec
Student: Teacher do you eat mouth?
Me: 😶 no, can’t say that I do! What kind of mouth? — Pig, cow, goat? (thinking to myself, you eat pigs feet and chicken head, maybe you eat the mouth too? . . )
Student: No, teacher “mouth”
Me: -_- I feel like we’re not communicating here. . . Can you spell it?
Student:  M o u s e 🐭
Me: 😱😨 Nope, thought mouth sounded bad, but that might just be worse.

Student 1– “How many chances do I have to do the Final Exam.”
Me — “One” ?!?
Student 1– “But I want to go to graduate school!”
Me — “Then you sure as heck better be able to do this test in one try or graduate school is probably a no-go!”
Student 1– “0_0 oh, I know.”
Me — “Then why oh why did you ask?!?!?!”

Student 2– “Teacher, some people in my class have very bad grades. Can we fix it.”
Me — A) this is finals week for the semester, so no. B) your grades are bad because you cheated on 2 assignments, failed to complete 4 assignments, gave me one-word answers for other assignments, and skipped class 4+ times. So don’t you think you should have worried about your grades then instead of now? — And you are the class leader — you should have led your class better, instead your group has the worst participation.”
Student 2 — “Oh. Ok teacher. I know.”
Me — “Then why oh why oh why did you ask?!?!?!?!?!?!”

Merry Christmas from China!

24 Dec

Great Christmas Eve! 🎅 Went to breakfast and shopping with mom. Saw totally cute gift ideas!! 😊 Then my friend Harry came by and we made peanut butter and ritz cookies, had delicious dinner, walked the river looking at the lights, saw the fireworks, etc. ❄ Even saw an electrical fire! 😱 Then the lovely cafe owner’s wife gave me a cupcake for Christmas 😍 Even though China doesn’t really celebrate Christmas, lots of locals stopped to wish me Merry Christmas. Then woke up this morning to awesome gifts, delicious breakfast treats from a friend, and a spa day. Tonight I party with some friends here at the foreign housing.  A real wonderful life!

Jumping Jacks (Wushu-Style)

Look carefully, and you’ll see the Chinese lanterns in the background – I thought this was a cool photo. These are performing Chinese students of Wushu from the Shaolin Temple during the biennial Wushu Festival.

Shanghai Pearl Orient

13 Oct

Perhaps one of the most famous landmarks in China, running parallel to the Forbidden City and the Great Wall is Shanghai’s great Oriental Pearl Tower (Dongfang Mingzhuta). Standing bright and beautiful in the Lujiazui area along the Huangpu River, the Pearl Tower is on almost every landmark postcard, movie cityscape, and Shanghai tourist items. It was once accidentally moved to Hong Kong on a US movie poster and the Chinese people were understandably horrified. Built in 1994, this tower was the tallest structure in China up until 2007, and is still one of China’s top ranked “things to see.” Viewers however are recommended to come early, early, early in the morning if you want to beat the lines.

Hours are from 8:30am – 9:30pm

If you want to go clear up to the “Space Module” it’s 220RMB ($33). If you just do the upper observatories it’s 160RMB ($24).
