Chinese Health Concerns

17 Nov

You know you drink too much soda when . . . the gas station cashier gives you a free bottle of water and looks disapprovingly at your drink selection. All the while telling you, “tsk tsk . . . water have more power.”  0_0

Music I Love ~ How Much is Your Girlfriend

31 Oct

Rather sad / depressing storyline, but the song is kind of beautiful.  For all of my girlfriend’s who stay long after they should have walked away.

Random Question of the Day

9 Jul

How much did the composer/copyright owner of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” song make? Because it is EVERYWHERE. . . There’s the Inception song for fantasy film intros and the Pirates of the Caribbean song for every single espionage / suspense moment.  I want that copyright!  $$$$ signs are floating in front of my eyes.  It’s even showing up still at all the sporting events!  And on my TESOL demo video 😛

Get Excited! New Fees from the legal Basic Skills Course!

12 Jun

(For those of you unfamiliar with the process, law students in Iowa have to take a “Basic Skills” course their first year that covers everything they were just tested on for the bar exam.)

Now, on with the show.

Just received an email that started off really exciting, with lots of exclamation points:

“This Year’s Annual Meeting and Basic Skills Course are going paperless!” (Bold red font straight from the email).

Naturally, you start going Woohoo! we’re helping the environment.  I’m all about this!

But then they go on. . .

“It is strongly suggested attendees print off the materials in advance of the event.”  (Lack of bold red print fresh from the email).

Oh.  So not helping the environment, just shifting the printing costs onto the obviously poor new lawyers that just graduated from a college degree that permits students to take no jobs.  Students who paid a couple thousand dollars for a bar exam that didn’t cost that much to administer. As opposed to the bar association and supreme court that arranges and requires the multiple day event involved lots of paperwork.  Organizations who have plenty of money due to us paying for a bar exam that didn’t cost that much to administer.

Now, before our first job arrives, we need to pay for:

  • The Event ($100+)
  • The Hotel ($100+)
  • The Transportation ($100+)
  • Food (min $20+)
  • and Printing (One document for one event ~ there are several each day of four days ~ was 80+pages.)

Sorry,  this “Breaking, Exciting News” press release was an epic fail.  Not seeing the excitement this message acted like it was supposed to incite.

Getting Rid of Ants

21 May

First Home/Apartment Owner Lesson #1 :

How to Get Rid of Ants in Your Home.

In honor of the summer swarms that have begun to descend.  My mother taught me this trick a long time ago, and it works very quickly (overnight in fact a few times).

DIRECTIONS:

1.) Find out where they are coming from or at least figure out what line they are following when they move.  Ants tend to follow one another in a straightish line back and forth from the food source to their home.  So figure out where that line is.

2.) Mix together in a microwavable, closable bowl:

1/2 Cup of Sugar  (to attract them)

1/4 Cup of Borax (to Kill Them)

1 & 1/2 Cup of Warmed Water (to mix it all together).

3.) Dip a cotton ball into the mixture and place it in their line of travel.

4.) Wait.  The ants will come around to carry the mixture back to their den because it tastes so good (the sugar).  This means they will spread to poison around and it will eliminate the group.

5.) Replace the Cotton Balls When They Dry Out.  When you need a new one, just re-heat the mixture in a microwave and dip it in there again. Covers pretty much all summer!

The Joy of Childhood

31 Dec
I wrote this particular poem a while back, but this seems like a good time to share it since the wish still applies. So, Here is my New Year’s Prayer for You All!
The Joy of Childhood

Childish giggles fill the house,

As tickling games are carried out.

Cars are driven with humming noises,

Dollies talk with girlish voices.

Girls were purses, hats, and skirts,

Boys ride horses, kicking their boots.

Legos and Blocks build castles and towers,

Or even a fortress against enemy powers.

Imaginary dragons and knights come alive,

Damsels and princess’s are rescued by guys.

The earth becomes lava or maybe a flood,

Pies and cakes are soon made out of mud.

A good game of tag brings smiles to faces,

Trees are discovered to be awfully good bases.

My wish for us all in the coming new year,

Is that dragons and ogres are the worst of our fears.

I hope that you keep all your childhood dreams,

And remember forever you’re a king or a queen.

I hope we all have a sorrow free, joy filled New Year, and that each of us views the coming days with a child’s excitement. May we find a table on which to sit through the floods and volcanoes of life. May we find a way to make a pie out of the mud. And may there always be a good tree against which to rest. But most of all, may we each find a sticky hug and kiss at the end of the day. Happy New Year to everyone!

Lovely Literature: “Leisure”

20 Oct

I first ran across this lovely little poem about a year ago, and it really resonated with me.  Life and school were starting to pile up; and people kept reminding me that it was time to figure out precisely what I wanted to do with my life.  Everyone wanted answers as to “what I was going to do”, “where was I applying”, “where was I going?” I had no idea; well that isn’t actually true.  You see I went to law school with the idea that I could work with an auction house specializing in fine arts. I have been having a love affair with history for years, pretty much since my first history book on the ancient Greeks.  This continued through my undergraduate years, and it was supposed to be part of my employment plans. But then the financial crisis hit, Sallie Mae loans started getting higher and higher, and the jobs scarcer and scarcer.   That high-paying job at the New York law firm dealing with Insurance fraud started sounding a little nicer. Suddenly, I wasn’t so sure what I wanted to do.  I had already been so caught up in school and making sure that my laundry and dishes stayed done that I hadn’t read a history-based book or article in nearly two years. Did it really mean that much to me?–Wouldn’t the monetary reward of a big job be enough?

But that was when God used my world to step in.  Radio stations, news articles, Facebook posts, even those little Pinterest pictures friends sent me–everything around me was suddenly saying: “Stop.” and “Live!” Heck YOLO! was showing up everywhere.  And I came to the realization that it’s true: You only get one chance to enjoy the world.  I don’t care how you depict life after death (or the absence of it), you only Continue reading
