#Medical Adventures in #China!

23 Jan

Adventures in Medical China😷!!!

Had to go to the #Chinese #dentist yesterday with my mom after she lost half a tooth🤒. One of the hardest parts about being an #expat or living abroad is dealing with medical issues🤕. They speak no English. . . you can’t speak to them. Figuring out appointments, instructions, explaining sensitivity idsues, allergies . . . . is all very complex. 😭

So I called my school🏢 cause they are supposed to help. Three hours later, they gave me the phone number📞 of a guy who spoke no English (not helpful❌).

As all good foreign laoshi (#teacher) do, I went to my students👧👦. Several immediately responded with offers to help. One girl👧 found a really good hospital (Jilin University School of Stomalogy🏥) that had a #School of Dentistry. Another girl 👧called them and asked about the English. She warned them we were coming & got me the address. #Didi (China’s #Uber) 🚗 got us to the hospital, and one the other students👦 stood by his phone to be a #translator.

Luckily, the hospital 🏥 was EXCELLENT. The registration guide girl 👧 helped us book a teacher and got us the medical card. In China, you get a membership card when you visit the #hospital. That card has all your medical history, so if you go somewhere else, they just check the card to see your past. Very easy.

Went to the VIP office and waited. They found a dentistry student 👨 working there who had studied in #Maryland 🇺🇸 for a year, and he helped translate. Helpful & Good looking – Happy Days! 😛

Got an X-ray that took about 20 minutes. Went back and watched #Cdramas (Chinese soap operas)📺 while we waited. Saw the Doctor💉 after about 2 hours, he recommended a root canal and did the first part. We go back 3 more times in the next 3 weeks. 📅 His bedside manner was great!

All in all, thanks to my Awesome students and the very professional &
helpful staff at the hospital. . . It was a relatively painless!!🎉🎉

Total Cost: $206
Membership Card (for VIP service with a Professor doctor): $4
X-Ray: $2
Root Canal: $100
Crown: $100

SO CHEAP!!!🤑

Now There’s #Camo for #Food

Looks like a mushroom. Acts like a mushroom. Is a Bread Roll. Silly food. . . . Wearing camoflauge like he’s some sort of super food warrior!

#Foodie – Eggs are Gross 😭

20 Jan

One of the daily issues of life in #China is that they don’t clean the Eggs before you get them. So you gotta get the poop off before you can stick ’em in the fridge. These Eggs actually came from #Walmart and were in a real #Egg cart😮 Usually you gotta pick ’em out of a giant pile by hand 😺

#Pizza (made in #China)

19 Jan

First ever #homemade #pizza!!!! Made from scratch and pretty impressive if I say so myself. #China does not seem to believe in pizza #sauce since none of their pizza have much if any. They have a tendency to just throw #cheese on the dough without. So, tonight (to celebrate end of the #semester), I decided to try at a REAL (Okay, fairly recognizable) pizza-ish pizza! Came out yummy!🍕

#Foodie – Chinese Salad

17 Jan

For the Inner #rabbit in us all.  This was one of the #veggie dishes served the other night.  Just lettuce and #Chinese chives and cucumbers.  Actually nice to see Veggies after being stuck with fast Food for a while 😜  This is the closest China really gets to salad…

#NoSmoking. Really

16 Jan

We’re still a little stumped by this one.  About 8 #cigarette holders were on the table, filled with water and #nosmoking signs🚭.

Ok, I get the ‘no smoking’ 🚭. . . . but then why put out 8 cigarette holders🚬 at all???  If to SAY no smoking, wouldn’t one do the job?😂

They took up a lot of table space, and we were all just rather perplexed 😜

#Smoking Snowman

15 Jan

Apparently the delivery guys at #KFC were feeling cold yesterday. ⛄️❄️  Temps are getting towards -23C

Not sure how much help he’s gonna be today. . . . . 😜

I love that he’s still got his #cigarette 😂

#Baking in China – Apple Pie!

14 Jan

Viola! I make a mean #ApplePie if I say so myself. Little more difficult to do in #China; but still. . . . came out delicious!   People at work appreciate it 😜

Little Lost Livvy Bear

13 Jan

This is my face about 90% of the time while living abroad 😜
Dictionaries? ✅ (4)

Maps? ✅ (2)

Chinese App? ✅ (6 and counting)

Students Phone Numbers for Emergencies? ✅

Sadness, #Chinese still is Such a complex #language!  Even after 4 years!

***Even the sign is probably wrong, poor Livvy Bear!!

Ordering Take-Out via #Alipay

13 Jan

Using #Alipay to order #TakeOut Food in #China 😊 🍴

IMAGE 1 – Placing your order

1. Open Aliplay

2. Choose the ‘e’ that says ‘Take-Out’

3. On the next page you’ll see a longlist of restaurants offering services. #pizzahut  is in my picture.  But you Also have #KFC #mcdonalds #burgerking #Chinesefood and more! (YES, MCDONALD’S DELIVERS IN CHINA!).

4. Pick the place you want.

5. The next page will have a list of #food offered with pictures (THREE CHEERS FOR PICTURES!!!)😜

6. Click the + symbol next to what you want. It goes into your cart.

7. When You’re done, Click the green button on the bottom of the screen.

IMAGE 2 – Paying & Address

8. The next screen is important.

At the top you’ll see a box with the location symbol (marked 1 on the second picture I posted). CLICK this box.

9. For the first time, ask a #Chinese speaker to add the address (and other popular addresses) for you. It will save it in a list.  In the future just pick the address you want it delivered to from the list.

10. Check the estimated delivery time right below the location button (Mine says 18:22 because #China uses 2400 time.)

11. If You’re Happy Click the Green button on the bottom and pay.

IMAGE 3 – Tracking Delivery

12. Go back to the home screen of Alipay – Choose ‘e’ for take-out again

13. You’re back to the List of restaurants. On the bottom toolbar, You’ll see a Square (2nd button) that I circled in pink. Click it.

14. Now you’re on a List of orders You’ve made. Choose the Chinese words next to the order.

15.  Tada! Now you have the estimated delivery time and a gps map showing you where the driver is.

DELIVERY.

16. They usually call you when they arrive at your door.  I Can’t speak Chinese well 😭 so I text them ‘你好.我来了’ which means basically ‘Hi, I’m on my way’. Can’t promise It’s accurate Chinese, but they always understand it. 😊

You DON’T have to pay the driver, delivery fees were in the original cost 😊

It’s several steps and tricky to figure out, but I was starving a while back and learned on my own of necessity 😜🍴

Hope it helps someone else!! ❤️
