I recommend these sites to my students when they are working on research for our International Econ course
Teaching Tale ~ The Cheating Boyfriend Fiasco
22 DecHahaha. . . . About a week ago one of my students had a meltdown in class–boyfriend (another student in class) had talked to a girl she told him not to talk to. The horror! They were in a group together. I didn’t know and asked them to work together on a project. She said “no” and started playing on her phone. I said “yes.” She erupted.
There were tears and yelling.
Apparently I was an evil teacher who was plotting secretly to force her to talk to said cheating boyfriend (first I’ve heard of a fight at all).
Tissues were waving in the air; gentlemen stepping up to defend her honor. Boyfriend sat stone-faced staring out the window. Finally stood up and apologized that yes, he said hello to “Crystal” but he really didn’t mean it. He was trying to be nice. He’s not sure how he could ignore her when she said hello first. He won’t do it again. But it’s not girlfriend’s fault. Please forgive her.
So yeah. It was a thing (mostly a funny thing on my part, but apparently a traumatic event for her).
Then saw them in the last class this week, all snuggled up again. She smiled and thanked me for being such a great teacher and she just loved our class.
Don’t we wish all our difficulties were so simple and quick to pass by? 🙂 Watching my students start to live and experience the joys and trials of the world is such a reminder of how precious our memories are 🙂
BTW – I swear some of my college students here have the emotional stability of junior high students. Seriously, they are graduating seniors! These were their last 2 classes of their college careers! Omo!
Teaching Funnies
19 SepTeaching Funny -One of my students wrote in her paper “5 dollars is only a hair off a bull’s back to a company” – 😛 It sounds so much like something us Missourians would say! Amazing how sayings can sound the same around the world!
Happy Teacher Day!

September 10th was Teacher’s Day in China, the day students and administration recognize their teachers for all the hard work and efforts. I’m always impressed by how many students actually take the time to stop and tell me thanks or Happy Teacher’s day – yesterday, my entire class stood up and wished me a great day! It really is a great time for teachers and student to connect, reaching out to one another. Personally, I believe it is also a great day for teachers to reach out to the students and thank them for being so attentive and working so hard for them. I always like to stop and tell them how much I appreciate their time and efforts, and to let them know I respect them for actually working with me instead of cheating their way through.
I really do have great students!
Terrifying Mamas

This week was the first week of classes for my Business and Professional Ethics class, where I teach senior Chinese students. They were given the question “Your brother is unqualified for the job, but as the CEO you give it to him. Ethical or Unethical.” Naturally, one student after another answer Unethical, giving the standard reasons. Suddenly one young man jumped up in the back of the room and said he wanted to say something. Showing obvious passion, he announced the situation was “Very Ethical” and proceeded to offer his main reason: “most importantly, your mom probably wants him to have that job and if you don’t give it to him. . . . Well your mom is going to be so angry and I just think that’s all I need to say about that! I just think it has to be ethical, your mom will be angry at you or maybe cry.”
There we have it folks, the gauge by which we judge our ethical standards – Mom‘s response!

20 MayI’m so wonderfully blessed. ❤ Just spent the afternoon chatting with a student about his dreams for the future and past accomplishments. He has worked incredibly hard and gone from speaking broken Chinese only to speaking Chinese, good English, and good German. He’s now graduating from college with an American Bachelor’s degree, and he’s off to Germany to start new adventures. It’s such a blessing to see what he has done and to hear about where he is going. And to be the proud teacher of a student this awesome (who brings me cola every time we talk 😛 ) is just a wonderful feeling. I’m so happy to have a chance to be part of their lives. ❤
Teaching is not an easy job, I’m a little surprised at just how difficult it actually can be. Well, time-consuming is probably a better word than difficult. It just takes a lot of time, effort, and heart. To be rewarded with students who get to move forward in their lives, who are seeing dreams realized and lives blessed is worth every last bit of work.
Teaching Award!
16 AprLife has been a little bit crazy recently; although I kind of feel like I am always saying that. The university has put on a program where ever teacher goes through strict evaluation. The first round had students evaluating their teachers. The second round, each teacher visit five other teachers twice and evaluates them both times. So we are all judged 10 times. Plus, our bosses are evaluating us twice each.
Plus, the mid-term exam for my students was re-scheduled a week earlier, right after two weeks of holidays – meaning, I suddenly went from 2 more weeks of classes to my last class overnight.
It’s all been a wee bit insane 🙂
However, one awesome thing happened this week! I was chosen as one of 76 professors to give a sample lecture in front of the Provincial experts as part of the school’s evaluation. The 76 professors were judged accordingly, and the top teachers receive a bonus. And I was chosen as one of the top 5 in my group!
My first year, and I’ve already gotten an award!
It was really exciting! 🙂
