Giving Blood? Not Today!

25 Apr

Was going to give blood to get my blood type. Got in the car. Then mom explained that they took a whole BAG instead of a vile like at the doctor. Ummmm. No. Back you vampire!

I am hiding my veins from all blood suckers. Test kit from Amazon, here I come. (o,..,o)

My friend: “ It’s an insubstantial amount. Painless. Physiologically cannot make you faint. Don’t be a baby.”

Me: “I am a coward This is a fact. But I live with it.”

The choreography here (and of course the music) is just stunning. I have a friend who was a dancer, and she would give her right leg to have been part of this.

Book Disclaimers: “Wheel of Time” will Steal Your Time

Picture

First off, I adore this series of books, or at least I did for a very long time.  Many, many years ago, I picked up a friend’s copy of “The Eye of the World” and ran straight through the first six books within less than a month.  I consumed them with a passion that was fierce and undying; Robert Jordan was just an amazing author.

A lot of people have a problem with the fact that much of the series seems kind of reminiscent of LOTR, and that is certainly true.  There are “dark riders,” a collection of men that went terribly evil and sold their souls to the dark lord, there are trolls, and of course wizards. But Jordan’s work is also incredibly unique and wonderfully in-depth. Who can reject a fantasy series that has it’s own maps? And its own university webpage dedicated to the dozens of associated games. There is even supposedly a movie coming out before too long.  To put this series into perspective for fantasy newbies, this book was more of a cult classic than GOT.  It spins hundreds of little webs and tales, making it as complex (if not more) than George R. R. Martin’s series.    You may be following as many as twenty side stories at any given time, all of them vital to the main theme.  Combine the intricacy with the beautiful writing style, and the books are sheer magic.  You get an incredibly beautiful, LONG series of books. Book Review: “The Guidebook for International Students in Québec”

24 Apr

I don’t know if I can really call this a book review, when it’sonly a five page pdf, but what the hey! 🙂 Author Tobias Fisch has graciously put together a handy little online booklet for students interested in studying in Québec/Canada.

To start with, a disclaimer: I get the feeling that the author is talking about studying in High School, because he/she discusses the opportunity toparticipate inProm, Graduation, and the “big exams.” Still, I didn’t think that really detracted from the guidebook–only a short part (the section on how classes work) was relevant to what level of education you’re in. And if you are in high school, it’s all good–especially the part about the 10-day schedule!

The rest of it went over generally helpful information forallstudents studying abroad (how to adjust to a host family, how to avoid homesickness) and then very specific information aboutQuébec itself starting…

DO YOU KNOW YOUR BLOOD TYPE?

23 Apr

Good point. . . . What if you’re in a wreck and losing blood fast. Do you have the answers you need?

WHAT BLOOD TYPE ARE YOU?

Do you know your blood type?  I do not.  In these many years I have never needed to know it.  BUT, now, for a VISA (in country not credit card) application, I need to know it.  Who Knew.

Sure, I did the test in High School Biology.  Don’t remember the results.

Sure, I have donated blood.  Don’t have the card and never cared.  Just more junk in the wallet.

Yes, I have had surgery.  That requires a request for an information release authorization form, the return of said form, and the re-return of said information.  This goes for labor and delivery as well….Speaking of labor and delivery, I have the card that was in my daughter’s hospital bassinet and it does have a blood type on it, but no indication of whether it is mine or hers.  This request process goes for Dr.’s offices, too…

Gilbert Law Summaries List

23 Apr

Hello! This is for the Law Students/Lawyers who read my stuff 🙂

I have recently discovered that I couldn’t find a good list of Gilbert Law Summaries that are available.  Although most of them are available on Amazon, there are so many new, used, and duplicate names that it is hard to find out what is actually there. However, there isn’t a publisher website to locate or a list I could find elsewhere. So I put my own together!

I have listed them alphabetically here as closely as possible.  There actually aren’t as many as I thought; however, some differ from Emanuel and cover up those holes.  Hope this helps someone else!

Living With Eosinophilic Cellulitis

20 Apr

Not very many people are aware of this, but I have been diagnosed with Eosinophilic Cellulitis.

Also know as Wells Syndrome, the disease is technically an “inflammation of skin cells” and involves problems with the immune system and white blood cells. Apparently, the disease is incredibly rare (fewer than 200 cases recorded in literature), and pretty much nothing is known about it.

The simplest way to explain the problem is to say my immune system likes to live in over-drive.  Even the smallest injury (a mosquito bite for example) sends my immune system into a panic, thinking that I’ve been shot and am dying in a cold alley somewhere without treatment. Basically, my body tries to heal an injury that doesn’t really exist. So all of the little skin cells start swelling up, a rash breaks out, my skin becomes incredibly hot, and anything that touches it only spreads the problem further.  It itches like crazy, like any healing wound, but if I touch it the skin cells break open, my skin starts peeling down layers, and it spreads and spreads.  Even clothing is a problem.   Continue reading
