Corporate Governance Vocabulary

31 Dec

Hello!

This semester I had the wonderful opportunity to introduce my International Business Management students to the concept of International Corporate Governance.  They had studied the idea of corporate governance the previous semester, but it revolved significantly around US rules and regulations.

This time, my goal was to expand their understanding of Business Management, Corporate Law, and Business Ethics to an international level. The ultimate plan was for the students to understand the international parties, rules, and features of Corporate Governance.  At the end, the students should be fully capable of doing the research and opening up legal, ethical corporations around the world.

Unfortunately, I teach ESL students; it quickly became clear that in order for the class to proceed some Corporate Governance-related vocabulary was necessary.  Since I know many other students suffer from the same problem, I have decided to share with you the same vocabulary I shared with my students!

In the interest of helping English-speaking teachers or businesspersons trying to use Chinese, I have also included the Chinese translations my students provided for the words.   While I cannot attest to the validity of the Chinese terms (I highly recommend you verify these terms in case you need to use them in an official capacity), perhaps they can help in general conversation. 🙂 If you find corrections, please let me know in the comments!

I’ll be updating the vocabulary page regularly over the next 15 weeks or so with new words (about 20-30 a week).

Teaching Tale ~ The Cheating Boyfriend Fiasco

22 Dec

Hahaha. . . . About a week ago one of my students had a meltdown in class–boyfriend (another student in class) had talked to a girl she told him not to talk to. The horror! They were in a group together. I didn’t know and asked them to work together on a project. She said “no” and started playing on her phone. I said “yes.” She erupted.

There were tears and yelling.

Apparently I was an evil teacher who was plotting secretly to force her to talk to said cheating boyfriend (first I’ve heard of a fight at all).

Tissues were waving in the air; gentlemen stepping up to defend her honor. Boyfriend sat stone-faced staring out the window. Finally stood up and apologized that yes, he said hello to “Crystal” but he really didn’t mean it. He was trying to be nice. He’s not sure how he could ignore her when she said hello first. He won’t do it again. But it’s not girlfriend’s fault. Please forgive her.

So yeah. It was a thing (mostly a funny thing on my part, but apparently a traumatic event for her).

Then saw them in the last class this week, all snuggled up again. She smiled and thanked me for being such a great teacher and she just loved our class.

Don’t we wish all our difficulties were so simple and quick to pass by? 🙂 Watching my students start to live and experience the joys and trials of the world is such a reminder of how precious our memories are 🙂

BTW – I swear some of my college students here have the emotional stability of junior high students. Seriously, they are graduating seniors! These were their last 2 classes of their college careers! Omo!

Life in China ~ Shhhh, they’re sleeping

Only in China. . . The Construction Bank was closed today with a sign in the door. I asked some students to read the sign and tell me if the closing was for a reason. . . “They’re taking a rest day. They decided everyone needs a rest.” 0_0 Can you imagine a US bank just closing the doors one Saturday for a “rest day.”?

48 Hours in Kaifeng ~ City of Chrysanthemums

Where? ~ Kaifeng, Henan, China

How? ~ Fly into Zhengzhou (an international airport). Grab the train or a bus to Kaifeng (takes about 2 Hours)

Recommendation ~ Don’t go later in the winter than November 20th or so.  All the cultural sites will be winding up their activities and events, so you’ll miss all the fun things to do there.  For example, we caught the last showing of the Millennium Park War (a major thing to see).

Cost ~ Please note that the costs below are what was reported to me. To be honest, costs vary from week to week here. So it could be as much as 20CNY higher or lower (about $4) for each place, or it could be what I told you. It really depends on the day.

Kaifeng

Why?

The Ancient City of Kaifeng 开封 (kI fuhng) lies in the heart of central Henan Province, China and trails just south of the Yellow River.  The local Henan people speak of Kaifeng, the capital of six different dynasties and a town filled with beautiful flowers and famous dishes, with the greatest respect and awe.

Gates

“Open and Shut”

Dating to 364BC, a small city of canals and waterways linked to the Yellow River was created. This little town would eventually morph into a thriving business and merchant city, now home to almost 6 million people. The city would be destroyed, abandoned, and re-built many times in the following centuries, and remnants of these cultures can still be seen at the local cultural sites and the city museum.  In fact, for about 114 years, Kaifeng was the largest city in the world! The tour guide compared it to Tokyo, New York, and Paris in its time.

The characters in the name Kaifeng represent the phrase “Open and Shut.”  Officially, this name represents the fact that Kaifeng represents open and shutting doors.  Kaifeng has always been open to new ideas, new theories ~ a center of business, technology, and politics.  But it is also closed, remaining true to the traditional values and beliefs of its ancient inhabitants.  This is why when you visit, you can find both Ancient villas that appear unmarked by the intervening centuries and modern Shopping.

Secretly, our guide says “Open and Shut” is the name because if you open up the windows in Kaifeng, you’re blown away by the winds.  Perhaps true, it was seriously freezing and the wind could have cut through a sheet of glass.   Continue reading
