Teaching Tale ~ The Cheating Boyfriend Fiasco

22 Dec

Hahaha. . . . About a week ago one of my students had a meltdown in class–boyfriend (another student in class) had talked to a girl she told him not to talk to. The horror! They were in a group together. I didn’t know and asked them to work together on a project. She said “no” and started playing on her phone. I said “yes.” She erupted.

There were tears and yelling.

Apparently I was an evil teacher who was plotting secretly to force her to talk to said cheating boyfriend (first I’ve heard of a fight at all).

Tissues were waving in the air; gentlemen stepping up to defend her honor. Boyfriend sat stone-faced staring out the window. Finally stood up and apologized that yes, he said hello to “Crystal” but he really didn’t mean it. He was trying to be nice. He’s not sure how he could ignore her when she said hello first. He won’t do it again. But it’s not girlfriend’s fault. Please forgive her.

So yeah. It was a thing (mostly a funny thing on my part, but apparently a traumatic event for her).

Then saw them in the last class this week, all snuggled up again. She smiled and thanked me for being such a great teacher and she just loved our class.

Don’t we wish all our difficulties were so simple and quick to pass by? 🙂 Watching my students start to live and experience the joys and trials of the world is such a reminder of how precious our memories are 🙂

BTW – I swear some of my college students here have the emotional stability of junior high students. Seriously, they are graduating seniors! These were their last 2 classes of their college careers! Omo!

English Translation for the Malaysian Business Registration Form

30 Sep

In Corporate Governance this semester, we are learning about International Rules of Incorporation, Bylaws, Corporate Structures, etc.  It’s actually proving to be a fairly fascinating class, and I’m enjoying watching the students work.

One of the assignments I have given them is for each group to choose a country and to complete the appropriate Articles of Incorporation paperwork for that country.  Anyways, long story short, I ended up on the SSM (government) website, which directed me to with Form A (the Business Registration form). Unfortunately, it was entirely in Malay, making it useless to my students.  So I decided to translate it!

I cannot promise you that this is an exact translation, but I believe it is pretty accurate. I hope this will help someone out!

Vypr VPN (Update)

29 Sep

Vypr VPN

A while back, I did a review of VyprVpn and mentioned some problems I was having with it here in Asia.  Since, I seem to have fixed most of my problems, I thought I would post an update on how it’s going!

VYPR

Price: Same

Check out this post for a pricing run-down

Review: If you do decide Vypr is for you, go through this link for an extra 50% off your first month 🙂

Installation: Easy, but Repetitive

Review: The process for installation is pretty easy.  Initially, you visit http://www.goldenfrog.com to set up an account and download the VPN.  That process is actually really easy.  And I didn’t have any problems with the DNS server when I set it up (unlike with Astrill).

One problem I’ve now run into is that the program keeps stalling (I hit connect and it stalls out, delivering a warning) and I have to re-install it every time I re-start my computer.  I’ve got the installation program downloaded now, so all I have to do is re-open it and run through the steps (takes about 3 minutes).  But it’s still a little annoying.

Also, the last update doesn’t work for me at all. It just shuts down Vypr.

Use: Easy (pretty much)

The recent update didn’t change appearance any, so the use-process is the same.

When I turn on my computer, I open the program from my desktop.  You can set it up to start automatically if you want.  The box will look like this:

Untitled picture

If you want to just connect right away, just click the blue connect button. If you want to change locations, click the exclamation mark looking blue button.  I have found that I never use the “Fastest Server” setting and I am constantly changing servers.  Just a tip, try to run with locations that look like someone no one else would use–the less famous nations on the list.

The little gear in the top right corner is where you can change the protocols.  I found however that the only protocol that works for me is PPTP.  Anything more and it won’t connect.  I also recommend that you set it to “Automatic Reconnect” — Vypr tends to dis-connect and re-connect frequently for me on poor internet servers so I like for it to reconnect without having to repeatedly punch the buttons.

That’s all there is to it! Just click connect and then close the program when you’re done.

Understanding Stocks and Share (Corporate Governance ESL)

11 Sep

**This is very simplified for the sake of ESL learners who are new to Corporate Governance.

Let’s pretend you want to start a corporation – you have a name and products.  But you need money.  You don’t have any money, your partner’s don’t have any money.  What do you do? The only thing you can sell for money is the company itself.

So that’s what you do.  You decide that you will sell stocks.  What is a stock? – it is the right to claim the profit’s the company earns and the right to decide what the company does.  Now let’s say you divide the stock into 1000 shares – what is a share? – it is a small piece of paper saying you own 1/1000th of the stock – you get 1/1000th of the profits and you get 1 vote of a 1000 possible votes deciding what the company does.  In return for owning your share of the stock, you give the company money so that it can develop and grow.  To prove that you own the shares, when the corporation begins, it gives the owners, or shareholders as they are called, stock certificates – the papers we were filling out in class (basically fa piao or official receipts)

One person can buy more than one share – the board will decide a certain price for each share (i.e. $1 per share) and you can own as many shares as you pay for.  So let’s say I decide to pay $500 = I get 500/1000 shares = my vote will be counted 500 times and I will get 50% of the profits.  In most family-run corporations, family members will own 50-90% of the shares so that they control the majority of the votes and make most of the profit. If they own less than 50% of the shares, the other owners can out-vote them and make decisions for the company that the family doesn’t want.  This is a problem, so families are very careful to avoid that risk.

The board has to think about this when starting the corporation because they will have to be careful about who holds power over the profits and votes.  Remember the agency relationship – the shareholders or stock-owners are the principals, the board is the agent – the shareholders can always vote to remove or change the board, but the board cannot replace owners they don’t like. Basically, the original board of directors chooses their owners by selling them shares, but once they do that all power goes to the new owner.

**Note that the number doesn’t have to be 1000, the bigger the company the more shares will be available for purchase.

Happy Teacher Day!

11 Sep

mmexport1441860253435[1]

September 10th was Teacher’s Day in China, the day students and administration recognize their teachers for all the hard work and efforts.  I’m always impressed by how many students actually take the time to stop and tell me thanks or Happy Teacher’s day – yesterday, my entire class stood up and wished me a great day!  It really is a great time for teachers and student to connect, reaching out to one another.  Personally, I believe it is also a great day for teachers to reach out to the students and thank them for being so attentive and working so hard for them.  I always like to stop and tell them how much I appreciate their time and efforts, and to let them know I respect them for actually working with me instead of cheating their way through.

I really do have great students!

Terrifying Mamas

9 Sep

An ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy.
**Rudyard Kipling

This week was the first week of classes for my Business and Professional Ethics class, where I teach senior Chinese students.  They were given the question “Your brother is unqualified for the job, but as the CEO you give it to him. Ethical or Unethical.”  Naturally, one student after another answer Unethical, giving the standard reasons. Suddenly one young man jumped up in the back of the room and said he wanted to say something.  Showing obvious passion, he announced the situation was “Very Ethical” and proceeded to offer his main reason: “most importantly, your mom probably wants him to have that job and if you don’t give it to him. . . . Well your mom is going to be so angry and I just think that’s all I need to say about that! I just think it has to be ethical, your mom will be angry at you or maybe cry.”

There we have it folks, the gauge by which we judge our ethical standards – Mom‘s response!
