Life in China ~ Shhhh, they’re sleeping

12 Dec

Only in China. . . The Construction Bank was closed today with a sign in the door. I asked some students to read the sign and tell me if the closing was for a reason. . . “They’re taking a rest day. They decided everyone needs a rest.” 0_0 Can you imagine a US bank just closing the doors one Saturday for a “rest day.”?

Happy Teacher Day!

September 10th was Teacher’s Day in China, the day students and administration recognize their teachers for all the hard work and efforts.  I’m always impressed by how many students actually take the time to stop and tell me thanks or Happy Teacher’s day – yesterday, my entire class stood up and wished me a great day!  It really is a great time for teachers and student to connect, reaching out to one another.  Personally, I believe it is also a great day for teachers to reach out to the students and thank them for being so attentive and working so hard for them.  I always like to stop and tell them how much I appreciate their time and efforts, and to let them know I respect them for actually working with me instead of cheating their way through.

I really do have great students!

Bad Translations: Blueberry Muffin

3 Jan

20150101_163604[1]Lol, I ordered a “blueberry muffin” at this really sweet cafe near home.  The cafe is 4 stories and you can go up on the top floors to sit and watch the world go by.  They told me the blueberry muffin had blueberry sauce poured over it, and I thought that sounded like something good.  Then I got this huge, totally awesome creature with whipped cream and blueberry sauce!  Unfortunately, they gave use clear plastic gloves to eat it instead of a fork, so it was slightly messy. But DELICIOUS!

Happy New Year!

Soooooo Tired. . . . -_-

13 Dec

0_0 Tomorrow was supposed to be devoted to grading. Now I’m meeting Betty at 1, Joseph at 5, Alice at 7, Editing 6 papers, and Finishing grading. I’m going days at a time without eating normal meals. . . . If I were anywhere else, I’d be so overworked I’d lose weight. Unfortunately, Chinese students pay in snacks/treats, which means I’m actually still eating way too much 🙂

What’s Your Motto?

1 Dec

As some of you know, I am a professor of Business and Professional Ethics, so we’ve talked a lot about morality and being a good person.  This morning, I asked my classes to write down their motto – the phrase that they want to live by.  Since I was asking it of them, I decided to write my own as well.  Here Goes!

“Four Seasons” by Spudzalot

“Remember Olivia, that in all things you value wisdom, virtue, and graciousness.  In all actions or words, uphold the proper manners and practice self-control.  Never speak without thinking, never act without consideration.  Put others first (and all equally), but never forget your own importance. Listen to the wisdom of others, but don’t give up when you know your heart and faith is true. Be Humble, but Confident; Cautious, but Brave;  Gentle, but Strong; Forgiving, but Unwavering. And most importantly, work hard, but remember the purpose of life is happiness.  Be practical, but follow your dreams. When hardships come, or questions arise, believe in the power of goodness and always look for the beauty.  Life is meant to be enjoyed, so enjoy it!
