#HostGator – Payment Verification Process

4 Apr

Hostgator is a little serious about protecting your privacy. So you have three ways to purchase your package — Credit Card, E-Card, or Paypal.

If you use a Credit Card or E-Credit Card, you may have to do verification of your identity.  If you don’t do this within 48 hours, they will cancel your purchase.  I had to submit a copy of my driver’s license and a picture of my credit card.  For the Credit Card, they asked me to hide the first 12 numbers of my card. I also went ahead and blacked out the DOB, Middle Name, and some other private details on my Driver’s License.

Verification

*To hide information on a photo – 1) Save the image on your computer. 2) Right Click on the photo and choose “Edit.”  It should open the photo up in a program where you can draw on it.  3) Use a big brush or something to draw lines through the information you want hidden. 4) Save the picture.

If you have to do this verification process, they’ll send you an email asking you to do the requirement. They’ll tell you what to send, but not WHERE.

Go to your Billing Account (your password will have been in an email with the subject ‘billing’ along with a link to your Billing Account).

Look on the top bar for “SUPPORT.”

Verification 2

Once there, go to “TICKET HISTORY.”  You’ll see a support ticket is already open with the subject “Hostgator – Verification Requested.”

Verification 3

Click on the Ticket ID#.

It’ll open up a page where you see basically the same message as was in your email.  But at the bottom of the page you can “Reply” with a message and attach your documents.

Verification 4

Once you add your files, click “UPDATE TICKET”

Then you just have to wait for them to verify everything.

Setting up HostGator Website (Part 1)

BUYING YOUR HOSTING SERVICE:

You can get a discount on your service if you purchase HostGator with the PCMAG discount code via this link.  The basic service (I did a Hatchling program) is around $3-5 per month with the discount and depending on how many months you purchase.

Additional Costs & Available Services:

  • Domain Name (prices vary based on what ending you want – .com, .org, .net, .me)
  • Domain Privacy Protection Service at $1.08/month.
  • Protect Your Site from hackers at $19.99/year
  • Professional Email (if you want one – I don’t) at $5/month
  • Back-up your work daily at $19.95/year

PAYMENT & CARD VERIFICATION

Hostgator is a little serious about protecting your privacy. So you have three ways to purchase your package — Credit Card, E-Card, or Paypal.  For the cards, your billing address and phone number must be the same as you have on your Card Statement each month.

You may be asked to verify your card or payment information afterwards. You must do this in 48 hours.  For information on how to do that click here.

YOUR ACCOUNTS

On HostGator, you have two websites you’ll be operating with.  As soon as you finish your purchase, you’re going to get two different emails from them.

  1. The first should have the Subject ‘Billing.’  That’s your Billing Account information.  This email should give you a link to the Billing Account, your Login Name / Email Address, and a Password.
  2. The second should have the Subject “Your Account Info.’  That’s the information for accessing your new Control Panel for your Website!  It will also tell you the link to the CP, your Login Name, the Password, your server and some other details.

KEEP BOTH OF THESE EMAILS!

I recommend logging into both websites and changing your password to something more memorable.  But you won’t be able to do anything with the billing account until verification is completed.

Registering for a Sina Blog

3 Mar

1

  • I recommend using the Google Chrome Browser. Then right click on the page and click “Translate to English.” The translation is pretty good! Otherwise, You’ll have to work with the page in Chinese.

2

  • There are two options: Phone Registration or eMail. They are both pretty straightforward. The second tab is Email Registration and is fairly straightforward.  The boxes in order are Email Address, Password (6-16 characters), Interests (New, Entertainment, Culture, Sports, Technology, Finance, Fashion, Auto, Real Estate, Life), and Security Code.  That should register you, although you may have an activation email sent to your email.  The first tab (Phone Registration) is only slightly more involved.  The boxes in order are Phone Number, Password (6-16 characters), Interests (New, Entertainment, Culture, Sports, Technology, Finance, Fashion, Auto, Real Estate, Life). After entering that information, click the box that says “I want to use a registered mobile phone to send text messages” (我要使用注册手机发送短信).  Then text the phrase “yz” to the phone number 1069009010021.  Wait about 3 minutes and then click the green button.

  • Yay! You’ve Registered!
  • If you want to sign in again later, just go to http://blog.sina.com.cn/.  Use your username and password.

Bar Exam Upload Failure

29 Jul

So as most of you taking the bar exam are aware by now, the Examsof software and website is crashing all over the country.  At present, states I’ve heard about problems from include:

  • Iowa
  • Texas
  • Connecticut
  • Utah
  • Illinois
  • Missouri
  • Minnesota
  • Colorado
  • California
  • Rhode Island
  • Ohio
  • New York
  • Florida

and others.

Personally, I didn’t take this exam so I haven’t gone through this problem with the rest of you.  But I do have a lot of my law school year’s classmates who are currently discussing their problems and results on Facebook.  In case it helps someone else, here is what we’ve gathered:

  • Samples of the problems being experienced:
    • Website crashing
    • ExamSof itself crashing during the Test
    • Error Messages Appearing when takers attempt to upload their test answers.
    • Conflicting emails and messages about whether or not tests have been uploaded.
    • Problems with one test uploading and not another.
    • Reports that some tests have actually been lost (unverified ~ this was hearsay from someone who heard someone)
    • Attempts using Auto-load stop working when the option quits appearing.
    • Attempts using the Manual upload stops working when the page won’t load.

  • People tried calling Examsof, it took hours to get through if they got past the busy signal or got an answer at all.  Calling doesn’t seem to be worth the time.
  • They so far haven’t been responding to Emails, Chat Questions, or Technical Support calls.
  • The few people who got responses to Facebook comments on the ExamSof Website were told that ExamSof was working as quickly as possible to mend the situation.  They also said not to worry because all the tests are stored on your computer, and can simply be uploaded later.

At this time several of my friends have finally gotten their tests to upload. Here is how they did it:

  • Repeated attempts over and over until something worked.
  • Keep attempting Auto-Upload until that option disappears. If it works, good. If the option disappears and you still haven’t uploaded, manual up-load is your only option.
  • Visiting: Examsoft.com/manup and signing in (repeated attempts eventually worked)
  • Verifying that it worked.

What I’ve taken away from what I’m hearing:

  • Just keep attempting to make it work. Most people who got through did because they were patient and just kept trying.  Apparently letting things just keep loading instead of refreshing the page every few minutes is key.
  • The state bar associations are aware of the situation.  So don’t panic yet, they know something is wrong.
  • Just leave your test answers closed and keep attempting to upload them.
  • Save all the emails regardless of whether they say failure or confirmation just to show you made the effort.
  • If you get failure emails after the confirmation emails, it appears that they did load successfully.  Not positive about that, but that’s what I’m hearing.  Calling ExamSof later and verifying is probably the way to go.
  • If it still isn’t working. Stop.  Sleep. Try in the morning. Tell Exam Coordinators. Then try again in the afternoon. Before all other things, sleep and rest.  Stop stressing.  You have to make it through tomorrow, and it is all going to be fine.

GOOD LUCK!

How Many Times Have You Been Shared on Facebook?

9 Jun

If you are interested in finding out how many times your website (or any website) has been shared or drawn comments on Facebook, it’s simple.

Just type http://graph.facebook.com/yoursiteaddress into the URL bar on your browser.  It will then tell you how many times that page has been shared and how many comments have been posted.

Replace “yoursiteaddress” with the exact url (Http:// and www. included) of whatever page you want to look up. NOTE: If you add in www. where there isn’t one or remove www. where there is one, the results will change.

For example,

http://graph.facebook.com/http://www.yahoo.com

looks like:

Facebook

Whereas, one of my posts on Students Ramblings appears like this:

Adding Social Media Buttons to Your WordPress.com Website

14 May

I’m mixing directions from several different websites, but I have tried clearing it up as much as possible.  Enjoy!

Adding Social Media Buttons to Your Website via HTML Code

Although some WordPress.com (and other website-building site) themes have a way to automatically customize social media, quite a few actually don’t.  For my WordPress website, I used to just add the “Image” widget and link to my other accounts. But since you can’t line them up horizontally, that ended up with a long line of pictures down my sidebar.  So instead, I mixed directions from different websites, played around, and came up with the following instructions for adding a horizontal row of Social Media icons linked to your accounts.
